A rug cleaning hack that has saved my rugs over the years... the power washer.

Between kids and animals, we know a thing or two about rugs getting dirty. In our house, we do have stone floors downstairs and wood floors upstairs, but I do like to have rugs here and there to warm up our home.

But having rugs throughout the house (even though we vacuum quite often... like everyday) they occasionally need that deep clean. To me spot treating just isn’t a full solution. To me a spot clean is like a little Band-Aid, but in order to get the job done so that your rug is clean fresh and revived, enter the power washer.

Yes, you heard me right the power washer. I have had rugs that are quite expensive from Restoration Hardware that I have power washed and I have rugs from Costco that I have per power washed. I have yet to have a rug fall apart on me from power washing it.

So what you’re gonna do if you’re gonna have that rug taken outside. Make sure you clean the area first that you were going to take it to. If it’s your driveway, I would power wash that down first to eliminate the dirt before you start on your rug

Then simply layout your rug, hook up your power, washer, and get to work

Here is what that will look like in a quick video:

Now, if you use soap, which typically I use liquid laundry detergent, make sure you get it all out. Therefore, in order to do that, you just need a little bit of laundry detergent to go a long way. If you have a spot that needs more attention What I have done in the past that works is just using a broom, and once the rug is wet go ahead and sweep that laundry detergent around in your soiled spot before you power wash the soap off.

Now, once you’re done with the power washer, your rug’s gonna be pretty heavy. If your driveway isn’t at an incline, I would use something that has a flat edge to kind of scrape some of the excess water off or allow it to sit for a little while before you try lifting it up.

Now once you’re able and with another person of course, you need to get the rug off the ground in order for it to dry. Using my kids soccer rebounder is my favorite way to get it to dry quickly.

I lay the rebounder flat on top of the rug, hold the corners to the rebounder, and then lean it upright. Being that the rebounder is made from net material, Gives a perfect amount of ventilation for the rug to air dry

Now, if you do not have a rebounder, you can use trash cans or anything that you can put the rug on to get it off the ground

Typically, I wash my rugs at least twice a year. Make sure you check the weather. So that you’re having of hot dry weather, which will help dry your rugs quickly.

And there you have it, my easy hack on keeping my rugs, clean and not have to re-buy rugs, which can be quite expensive. I might’ve been there and I do know that.

Mama
