At home nail salon, a big win for our girl house

Having four daughters, therefore five women in the house, we have a tendency to get some girly items. Don’t get me wrong, we have the video game consoles and things that the boyfriends like to play too, but one thing that our girls and their friends have liked as a special treat in our home is our own nail salon.

So where did this idea come from? Well, during the Covid lockdowns when nail salons were forced to close, I happen to stumble across a Facebook marketplace ad for a nail salon chair. Unfortunately, due to the lockdowns, these nail salon tenants had closed up shop as their landlord decided to sell the building. The nail salon moved their chairs into their home garage and decided to sell them.

The price for a used nail salon chair was beyond affordable, and being that we had a truck to transport and a place to put it, I just couldn’t pass it up. We decided to turn one of our enclosed balconies into our nail salon. There is a roof over the balcony and this large cut out where we can see the backyard, to which I hung a curtain rod for those times I didn't want it to feel so open.
We installed the chair and hooked it up to the plumbing so that the chair had the hot water it needed. We already had electrical onto the balcony so we were able to plug it in and then we just put a drain pipe from the chair to the balcony drainage to allow the water to exit when we were done.

We installed a television and I took an old piece of furniture that I already had, painted it and placed in it all of our nail care items like all of the polishes, the UV light for gel paint, the nail files, as well as towels, soap, lotions, etc.

I also had lots of orchids up there that I have kept from my father‘s passing. The orchids I bought for his celebration of life and have kept them alive. Thanks to being able to see them often as well as I use the basin of the foot part of the nail chair to soak and water them. Orchids like to be soaked rather than just having water poured on top of them. The set up has worked out great.

It’s a fun little area in a space that we weren’t really using anyways. Having the nail salon chair makes for a relaxing space to decompress while getting a back massage, lighting some candles and watching a show or spending some fun mother daughter time. My girls have gotten quite good at nail care and I love when they treat me to a manicure.

Sometimes you have to look outside of the box when planning a space and make sure that beyond making a place pretty, you need to make it functional, fun and a place where you can make some happy memories. Having a nail salon in our home has done that for us. I might’ve been there, and I do know that.
