Birthday traditions

We have a few different birthday traditions in our home. One that we instituted from when my kids were very young has been the wearing of the birthday hat. We have a hat that my kids have worn for every birthday photo and it’s so fun to look back and see them in that hat as they’ve grown older.

Another tradition that we have is to decorate the person's bedroom door for their birthday. It's a fun birthday morning when their door has been adorned with streamers and decorations for them to walk through when they wake up. What’s been fun for me as a mom is that I started the tradition with the kids, but they have taken it amongst themselves to do it to their siblings. Here’s what a birthday door in our house looks like.

The one other birthday tradition that we have is for breakfast. I make our kids age that they have turned into a pancake. It’s actually quite easy to form a number onto a griddle with pancake batter. I find just using a spoon to draw it out works just fine. Then if you have a little over spill in the number, simply cut it off with a butter knife to shape it how you want it. It is just a pancake after all.

I prefer to use a plug-in griddle as opposed to a frying pan. It’s so much easier as it is completely flat so you can flip your pancakes really easily. It’s also the simplest to clean. This is the griddle that I have I love:

And there you have it, our simple birthday traditions in our home that are very easy to do and the kids look forward to them. I think it’s important to institute traditions to make your family members feel special on their special day.
