Homemade laundry detergent- cheap, effective and so fresh smelling

Years ago, one of my daughters when she was young would constantly get little bumps all over her body that time I realized was coming from our laundry detergent. We went from Tide to Costco‘s Kirkland Signature brand detergent to you name it, I tried it. After some searches online decided to make my own laundry detergent. It seemed so simple and with so few chemicals and fragrances. I figured it would probably be good for her skin. Sure enough it worked. Her skin was clear and free of rashes. I used this homemade detergent for quite some time and then switched back to regular store detergent once it seemed she had grown out of her skin sensitivity.

Fast forward to today . A friend of mine, and I started talking about the amount of chemicals as well as fragrances that so many of our home cleaning products have and the topic of laundry detergent came up. It brought me back to when I used to make my own and I begin to think that I needed to try that again. I still remember the smell and how fresh our clothes were as you could just feel that there wasn’t a residue left on the clothing. Now I will say, my kids do still also like the Method brand laundry detergent in the Ginger fragrance, however, I think this homemade works fantastic and smells super fresh. I prefer it.

So just wanted to give you a quick easy tutorial on how to make your own laundry detergent. You can make liquid, however I prefer to make the powder. It’s only four ingredients and makes a ton.

At first I did what I normally do and I reverted to Amazon to purchase the supplies. This is one case Amazon did not beat the competition. It was actually quite a bit more expensive to buy the supplies off Amazon. I just did a quick trip to Walmart I was able to buy Enough supplies to not only make three batches of laundry detergent but enough leftover to make six more batches in the future. All of my supplies in total came out to $40. This is easily well over a years worth of laundry detergent and I average two loads per day Every day. That is for our family that has five people living at home and includes wandering bedding towels, etc. etc..

Fels Naptha Bar: $ 1.78

Borax Box $6.27

Washing Soda: $5.38

Baking Soda Box $ 3.34

So here’s the rundown on how to make homemade laundry detergent :

Recipe for one batch :

  • 2 cups borax

  • 2 cups baking soda

  • 2 cups washing soda

  • One cup grated Fels Naptha bar soap.

Once you have all of your ingredients in a bowl, simply mix it up store in an airtight container. I like to keep a tablespoon measuring spoon in the container for ease. Each load in a high efficiency machine takes 2 tablespoons. That’s it! I keep a smaller batch in this container and I have a backsock tub to refill this so I'm not dealing on the daily with a big bulky box.

There you have it. A super easy recipe to make homemade laundry detergent. I love the way that our clothes smell and feel using this recipe. It just feels clean and fresh and once you spend a few little bit of time to make some double batches, you’re pretty much set for the year. I might’ve been there and I do know this.
