I love this time of the year, transitioning my garden to get ready for all that spring time. Here is a quick little hack that works fantastic for us to make sure all those new little seedlings don’t get chopped away. Enter the mesh waste basket.

OK, so this is definitely one of those dollar tree hacks that absolutely works! Whether you have problems with snails, rabbits, or whatever above ground critters, you have that chomp away those cute little seedlings before they can grow into a beautiful plant, give them the gift of the waste basket protection.

These little dollar store, metal waste baskets work fantastic! They are the perfect size to cover your new little plant to give it enough space to grow, as well as the mesh allowing for the sun to pee through as well as the water.

It really just keeps out the critters. Before I started this hack, I would get so frustrated when I would come out to my newly planted garden only to find that it had been mowed down by some little critter. Super frustrating. Well, that frustration ends with this waste basket. It also reminds me to give that plant space to grow so I don’t over plant an area.

Now, when I purchase these I did so in person for a few, but for a large amount you should call your closets store to see their stock or order in advanced. Now I have popped in before looking for them in stock and they may have a couple, but I believe the secret has been let out as when the spring comes those baskets seem harder to find .With the dollar tree, I believe that it was 50 that I had to order and then go pick up.
Now the metal ones are fantastic because they last. In the past when the dollar tree was sold out of the metal I thought oh that’s fine, I’ll buy plastic. Bad idea. The plastic gets brittle in the sun and only last for a season.
These metal baskets are great because I use them over and over again for my planting and I also use them to collect eggs and bring them up for my chicken coop. I also have some in our orchard so that I can pick lemons and have a basket on hand to put them in.

Now, if you don’t have a dollar tree near you, here is a link on Amazon to order some and have them sent directly to you
So there you have it just a quick tip that has worked wonders for me. My plants have the opportunity to grow into a large plant that I don’t worry that the rabbits will mow down. Then once I don’t need the waste baskets for planting, I keep them around to have a basket to carry my produce up in. It’s really a fantastic tool for what is marketed as just a waste basket. I might’ve been there and I do know that.
