The key to a birthday success, make your own plan!
So do you have a birthday coming up? Birthdays are a time of great anticipation although sometimes we have high hopes for a spectacular day, but when that day comes, we end up with a bit of a let down.

For years, I had this vision in my mind of my husband and my kids, making plans for a great day for my birthday. Yet time and time again, they would be so sweet and get gifts but that’s it. When it came to doing something fun as a family or making a plan for an outing, they never knew what to do so therefore they did nothing.
Now that I’m in my 40s, I have learned after so many birthdays, the biggest key to making a great day is to making a plan yourself. Whether it be my husband, my family, or my friends, it’s not that they don’t care, it’s just I probably care much more. We do have some birthday traditions in our house which include decorating each other’s doors so that when they open it up there are streamers taped to the door that they get a walk-through.

We also have a birthday hat and obviously do the traditional cake, candles and presents.

I learned the key is to plan it yourself rather than be mad or disappointed. Yet I would rely on them year after year... what was I thinking? I could plan things myself and I would be happy and they would be happy that I wasn’t disappointed. I don’t know why it took me so long to learn this, but once I did birthdays have been fantastic.

Things I have planned for myself for my birthday
A massage, yes, I have planned and booked a massage for myself and went by myself. It was fantastic. It doesn’t need to be a super expensive high-end resort type of massage, I have been to the Korean aqua spa as well as the foot massage place that advertise foot massage but it’s really a whole body massage.

I have planned a hour long bike riding adventure with my family. Booking a six passenger bike was not very expensive and was extremely fun. With the six passenger bikes ending up all being reserved, they gave us 24 person bikes for the same price I would totally recommend this.

I have planned my own tea party with my friends. Making a invitation was simple and easy on Canva. Then I simply texted some girlfriends and said hope you can make it. No gifts just wanting to get together to celebrate with some tea and cake.

I have planned just a family bike ride that had us just putting the bikes in the back of the truck and heading to Coronado to bike around.

Those are just some simple suggestions and if there is something that you’re really into, go do it. Maybe that would be getting a Mani Pedi or doing something that you don’t normally do. I think the key is book it yourself! If you wait to have someone do it for you, that could end not happening, not what you were picturing or a day when nothing was planned at all. Trust me I might’ve been there, and I do know that.
